  • Freshly crushed achromatic pepper
  • 1 cupful low-sodium rootlike broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen black-eyed peas (may substitute canned integrated black-eyed peas, specified arsenic Eden brand)
  • 3 cups cooked rice, preferably basmati
