The look for this intensely flavored, hearty stew was handed down to erstwhile Post staffer Nancy Szokan from her mother. The crockery was a "never-fail crowd-pleaser" erstwhile Szokan was increasing up connected Cleveland’s East Side.

The braise requires a fistful of pantry-friendly ingredients, on with the sour cream. Serve the saucy crockery with the accepted spaetzle oregon with ovum noodles oregon your favourite starch — adjacent torn hunks of bread.

  • One (3-pound) full chicken, chopped into 10 pieces (see Note and Substitutions)
  • Fine salt
  • Freshly crushed achromatic pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil, specified arsenic canola
  • 1 ample yellowish bulb (12 ounces), coarsely chopped
  • 1/4 cupful saccharine paprika, preferably Hungarian
  • 1 cupful sour cream
  • 1 tablespoonful all-purpose flour
  • Chopped parsley, for optional garnish
